Weekly Wisdom: Why home visiting programs matter

Early intervention — beginning before a child is even born — can help lessen the harsh impact of poverty and help children reach their full potential in school and in life. However, many families do not have resources available to them to provide their children with a strong start. This is where home visiting programs come in. High-quality, voluntary programs like Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) help parents unlock their child’s potential. It addresses many of the social, health and educational disparities young children living in poverty experience. It can also lead to improvement in maternal and child health and promote child development and school readiness. The impact of these programs is clear.

We must urge Congress to renew MIECHV!
