Weekly Wisdom: Global Health Issues Should be our Priority

The U.S. is a leader in saving the lives of vulnerable women and children around the world. Due in large part to our efforts, the number of preventable deaths of children under the age of five has been cut by more than half since 1990. Additionally, mortality rates are declining faster than they ever have before. This is one of the great success stories in international development in the last 25 years. But we can’t stop our efforts now. Every mother, everywhere, regardless of income or where she lives, deserves to have a healthy pregnancy and birth. The president’s fiscal year 2019 budget proposes up to 30% in cuts to live-saving foreign aid investments. We can’t let this happen. The U.S. must continue its leadership to reach more vulnerable populations and save more lives.
