It’s Not Up for Debate: Candidates Need to Talk About Kids

A second grader in Ripley, Tenn.

“Hey, so what are your thoughts on the 2020 presidential election?”

Everyone is asking this question. The next election is top of mind for many, and rightfully so, but we should also talk about the societal change this election can bring.

When someone asks me what I think about the 2020 presidential race, here’s my answer:

We’re not hearing enough about kids.

This week was the 3rd presidential debate. We haven’t heard nearly enough about the candidates’ plans for kids. Not talking about a major part of our population is ignoring a huge opportunity.

Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) is the political voice for kids. Children are one of the most vulnerable populations in our country. We know that one of the best ways to invest in the future of this country is to invest in kids. That means prioritizing high- quality early education, preschool, kindergarten and child care. After all, 95% of a child’s brain is developed by age 5. We must make the most of this small window and set them up for success. It will result in a stronger economy, help alleviate the poverty gap and create a stronger society for all.

In early September, SCAN released the results of a national survey that identified Democratic primary voters’ desire to hear more from presidential candidates on the issues of high-quality child care and preschool.

The results were groundbreaking. No, seriously.

  • A 53% majority say they have heard little (31%) or nothing at all (22%) on these issues.
  • A 74% majority believe the issues of child care and preschool are important to them as they make up their minds on whom to support in the Democratic presidential primary.
  • 74% of voters also want to hear more about the candidates’ plans on these issues.
  • 83% want to hear more about the candidates’ plans to solve the crisis at the border and care for children who cross.
  • 90% want to hear more about the candidates’ plans to reduce child poverty across America.

Investing in kids is one of the most powerful, dynamic ways to end the cycle of poverty. The American public has spoken, they want to hear more about how these presidential candidates are going to invest in kids.

Join me in encouraging the democratic candidates to talk more about these critical issues for kids and families. We’re hand delivering these petitions to candidates to remind them: It’s time to invest in kids!
