We’ve been busy in Washington. In 2014 we supported the Seattle Preschool Program Levy. This project will serve 2,000 3- and 4-year-olds in Seattle in 100 classrooms by 2018.

In 2015, we helped pass Best Starts for Kids, which will give more children in King County the early opportunities they need to thrive. We also helped enact the Early Start Act, which improves access to high-quality early learning for Washington children.

People in Washington care about kids here in the United States and around the world. From expanding preschool for kids in the U.S. to ensuring children survive and thrive around the world, advocates in Washington are the voice for children.

We’re calling on elected leaders to prioritize a child’s early years and give all kids a bright future.

Now we are working to elect more lawmakers who will stand for children.

This week, the Seattle City Council begins hearings on legislation that would create a new tax on sugary drinks to increase funding for education, early learning and public health programs in the city. This proposal is projected to reduce unhealthy sugary drink consumption while increasing consumption of healthier alternatives. Additionally, the proposal will increase funding for vital education, early learning, and healthy food access programs. This is a great chance for our city to demonstrate that our communities’ future is more important to us than soda industry profits.

We would like to formally invite you to our campaign kickoff in support of the upcoming sugary drinks ordinance on Wednesday, May 3. We need everyone we can to come out for the first City Council hearing to show their support. Our plan is to meet at the American Heart Association offices at 710 2nd Ave #900 at 8:15 am for our first campaign event and press conference. After hearing from community leaders, doctors, and educators, we will be walking as a group to City Council Chambers to show the council that the public is behind this ordinance at their first public hearing.

Ryan Murphy
Mobilization Manager, Washington

After graduating from the University of Arizona in 2008, Ryan moved to Honduras to teach for two and a half years in a rural orphanage. When he returned to the United States, Ryan made a career in nonprofit social justice advocacy. He has worked on a variety of issues, including immigration reform, international human rights, preservation of safety-net programs, economic justice and environmental protection.

Prior to joining Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), Ryan served as the Washington State Director of Working America, the National Organizer and Lobbyist for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, and Social Justice Organizer at the University of San Francisco.

Shortly after getting married in 2015, Ryan and his wife moved to Seattle, Washington to settle down in what he says “is the best state in the country.”

Mackenzie Chase
Government Relations Manager, Washington

Mackenzie works to expand access to high quality early education and care for children in Washington through state and local advocacy. After spending years working on diverse policies, Mackenzie is thrilled to be focusing full-time on high quality early learning that prepares children to thrive in school and life.

Before joining the team at Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), Mackenzie worked as an Early Learning Policy Associate at Children’s Alliance. She also spent over four years working as a Communications Director and Research Analyst at the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where she worked on policies ranging from capital infrastructure to grant programs for economically disadvantaged schools.

Mackenzie grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to get a B.A. from Northeastern University. She now resides in beautiful Seattle, Washington.
