  Florida is one of 33 states in the U.S. where the cost of child care is more than in-state college tuition. That means high-quality care leaves out children living in poverty.

  Access to high-quality child care helps children – especially those living in poverty – get a strong start in life and helps ensures equal opportunity for every child. Congress has a chance through the tax reform bill to help millions of kids who don’t have access to quality child care.

  Ten-year-old Maha’s* life has been turned upside down. After fleeing her home in Syria because of bombing, the school in her new community was bombed two times. Since then, Maha hasn’t been able to return to school. She has dreams of becoming a doctor, but without an education, she may be denied her dreams. 

  We can’t let that happen to a generation of children! Ensuring access to quality education as soon as children are forced to leave their homes provides them with the opportunity to achieve and reach their full potential.

  Meet 20-month-old Fatuma from Ethiopia.* Fatuma’s mom noticed that she had lost weight and became very weak. Fatuma was suffering from malnutrition. Luckily, health care workers were able to give her plumpy nut, a nutritious food given to kids suffering from malnutrition. 

  Plumpy nut is the kind of low-cost, high impact solution that helped save Fatuma’s life. Unfortunately, 5.6 million children each year aren’t so lucky. They die from preventable causes like pneumonia, malnutrition and malaria.

  Legislation introduced in Congress – the Reach Every Mother and Child Act – would scale up effective health and nutrition programs, like Fatuma received, to help more moms and kids survive and thrive.

  High-quality child care helps kids – especially those living in poverty – succeed. From starting school ready to learn to higher graduation rates, quality child care can transform kids’ lives. 

  A bill in Congress called the Promoting Affordable Childcare for Everyone (PACE) Act (S. 208 | H.R. 3632) would update the tax code to help with the cost of child care. 

  Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the PACE Act, and help more kids succeed! 

• Urge Congress to Publicly Oppose the Refugee Resettlement Cap

   

  Refugee children like 4-year-old Tamara* have seen things that no child should see. She fled with her family to Lebanon after the fighting in Syria threatened their safety. 

  Children like Tamara deserve a chance to be safe. The Trump administration’s decision to drastically reduce the number of refugees who can resettle means that even more children will miss out on the change to be happy, healthy and safe.

• Save Home Visiting Programs!

   

  The deadline for Congress to renew the Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting program (MIECHV) was September 30. MIECHV matches at-risk moms and dads and their kids with trained community members to support child literacy and teach parenting skills.  Unfortunately, Congress hasn’t acted yet. While programs continue to run, it is getting more and more difficult to keep up as funding runs out.

  Home visiting is an effective way to empower parents, like Jalyssa, be the best parents they can be. Jalyssa had a tough childhood. So when she became a mom, she wanted to do better for her kids – but wasn’t sure how. Because she participated in a home visiting program, the lives of her daughters – including Jayla (pictured here) – have been transformed. 

  If Congress doesn’t renew this home visiting program, 145,000 kids like Jayla could miss out on the chance to succeed. Urge Congress to renew MIECHV today!

  A federal program called the Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program helps to fund home visiting programs like the one Akeri’s family participates in. It is an effective, voluntary program for families living in poverty. Through educating parents, supporting child literacy and connecting families with social services, it helps kids succeed.

• Tell the Senate to Make Child Care More Affordable

  

  In most states, child care costs more than in-state college tuition. That puts the cost of child care out of reach for too many families. Moms and dads shouldn’t have to decide between keeping their jobs and keeping their kids in a safe, nurturing child care environment.

  A bill in the U.S. Senate called the Promoting Affordable Childcare for Everyone (PACE | S. 208) Act would help make child care more affordable for working families by updating the tax code to reflect today’s realities.

  The PACE Act would update parts of the tax code that help make child care more affordable for working families. It would increase the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit and make it fully refundable for low-income families.

  The Senate votes on SB-191 on Thursday, June 22. We need to build bipartisan support.  

  This bill is a positive step toward full funding for full-day kindergarten. It offers an additional $1,100 per student to school districts in 2019, meaning that more Granite State kids will have access to full-day kindergarten.

  Meet Arwa.* Arwa and her family were forced from their home in Iraq. For an entire month, she lived with frequent shelling before they were able to escape.

  Today, 28 million children, like Arwa, have no place to call home. Violence, natural disasters and war mean they experience fear and uncertainty, often living in a desperate conditions.

• Support Child Care for Working Families in Washington

  

  State legislators are negotiating a budget right now, and affordable child care is at risk. A critical program called Working Connections Child Care (WCCC) is dangerously underfunded. And legislators are also considering restricting access to WCCC for families who need it most.

  In Washington, it costs more than $1,000 a month for child care for an infant at a center, putting child care out of reach for many families. Investing in WCCC is a win for everyone. WCCC gives children access to high-quality early learning, provides parents affordable, reliable child care and lets child care providers stay in business.

  The Seattle City Council just passed the Sweetened Beverage Tax Ordinance. As a result, more of Seattle kids will have the support they need to be kindergarten ready.

  More than 700 million children – or 1 in 4 kids around the world – have been robbed of their right to childhood. Millions of children have their childhoods cut short because of who they are and where they live.

  Around the world, kids’ childhoods cut short due to poor health, extreme violence, early marriage, teen pregnancy, or being forced to leave school in order to work. Lack of access to health care, clean water and healthy food puts the world’s most disadvantaged children at a high risk of death—many before they reach their fifth birthday.

  Children in the U.S. are robbed of childhoods, too. Infant mortality, dropping out of school and teen pregnancy are among the many reasons that American kids miss out on childhood.
